The goal with this patch is not to directly address the Pacific\nbug, rather to bring Cinder in sync with Glance and possibly improve\nperformance in the default case.\n\nIncreasing object size isn\u0027t guaranteed to improve performance, it\nreally depends on I/O patterns.  Additionally, larger objects in RADOS\nmay impact recovery performance within the Ceph cluster itself.  I\nsuspect that performance analysis will show that a volume needs to be\nsignificantly larger than a typical Glance image to see meaningful\nperformance increases from a larger object size. No hijacking is taking place,\nhere\u0027s what\u0027s up:\n\nAn RBD image is stripped over a set of objects, and these objects are\nstored in RADOS, the distributed object store.  The result, among other\nbenefits, is that I/O to an RBD image is distributed across many nodes\nwithin the Ceph cluster.  Because the client communicates directly with\nthe OSD nodes containing the desired data, no single node becomes a\nbottleneck under high load.\n\nThere are three parameters that control RBD image stripping:\n\n1. The size of the objects.  This must be a power of 2, defaults to 4MB,\nand is the core of the bug this patch relates to.  It is the \u0027order\u0027\nparameter you see in the create() and clone() functions.  This is\ncaluculated from \u0027rbd_chunk_size\u0027 in our RBD driver in Cinder.\n\n2. Strip unit, a set of contiquious bytes in a single object.  Once the\nstripe unit is reached, we move to the next object.  This defaults to\nthe size of the object.
