into\nRBD using \u0027rbd import\u0027. Even though the file was sparse (only ~256K\nof actual LUKS header data on disk), rbd import read the entire\napparent size (e.g. 100GB), spending most of the time in kernel\nsyscalls iterating over sparse holes. This made encrypted volume\ncreation linearly slow with volume size (~32s for 50GB, ~72s for\n100GB).\n\nThe new approach:\n1. Create the LUKS formatted sparse file (unchanged)\n2. Extract only the LUKS header (first 16MB) with dd\n3. Import the small header into RBD (sub-second)\n4.
