Reading my explanation in the commit message, I ask myself: If the second default argument already is the placement, there would be no need to additionally pass the --placement=... option afterwards?

There is this documentation too, but it confuses me even more: https://docs.ceph.com/en/squid/api/mon_command_api/#orch-apply-rgw
In the parameter listing the second parameter is placement, not --placement. But in the example command it is --placement=string.

The error occurs with latest Reef and Squid and this commit makes ./stack.sh succeed in both cases. It also succeeds with a single default argument instead of two. I have not tested with other Ceph versions.
orch apply rgw <svc_id> [<placement>] [--realm <value>] [--zonegroup <value>] [--zone <value>] [--networks <value>...] [--port <int>] [--ssl] [--dry-run] [--format {plain|json|json-pretty|yaml|xml-pretty|xml}] [--unmanaged] [--no-overwrite] : Update the number of RGW instances for the given zone
