I would model more towards the employee/employer relationship.\n\nI sort of think of it as follows which is text I\u0027ve been trying to mentally work through since the discussion came up:\n\nTo start of, I am not a lawyer. I suspect a lawyer would say something very similar.\n\nIn terms of affiliation, I would encourage trying to mentally model the employer/employee relationship as the delineation of the legal relationship boundary. That being said, this model doesn\u0027t neatly fit into an attempt to infer affiliation beyond it.\n\nFor example, Corp A owns Corp B and operates Corp B as a wholly owned subsidiary. Employees are employed by Corp B and thus are affiliated with Corp B. If a major issue occurs, Corp A cannot reach in and direct Corp B\u0027s employees directly. That boundary and reporting/command structure is ultimately an affiliation insulator.\n\nHowever, if Corp Z owns corp Y and performs business using Corp Y\u0027s name under the the framing of \"doing business as\", that is still a legal registration, but the question has to boil down to who is the employer of the employees. In such an example it would likely be Corp Z.\n\nThat doesn\u0027t mean a privilege cannot be extended to accommodate granting inferred membership to employees of Corp B through Corp A\u0027s membership. But in the case we\u0027re focusing on, one of the main drivers of affiliation and tracking is to track and model legal association and relationship modeling.\n\nFor example, if Corp A wanted to sell off Corp B, it would have the freedom to do so. It would do whatever is necessary on side of the relationship, but Corp B employees might not notice at all. Their paycheck comes from Corp B.\n\nThen there is the concept of a dual-badge employee. For this mental example, we\u0027ll use Corp C.\n\nIn this case an individual employee is employed by Corp B, but then may also be badged as a contractor for Corp C. To a third party looking from the outside, the terms and modeling of that relationship is ultimately invisible. It can only be self declared, if even appropriate to declare. Those terms are defined by a legal agreement (i.e. a contract) between Corp B and Corp C defining what each party is responsible for.\n\nMost of the time the, these agreements revolve around the direct employee/employer relationship which affirms the base modeling. Where this can go sideways is if an employee of Corp C hands an employee of Corp B a patch and says submit it on their behalf. Realistically, that should be avoided because it can impact the lineage and province for copyright purposes, but at this point we are far outside the topic of affiliation for election or membership. In such a specific case, the terms of of the contract between Corp C and Corp B would be the guidelines for their interaction.
