Libvirt assigns those names automatically to the macvtap device and there's now way on domain definition time to enforce a certain name (like it works with taps). Libvirt is increasing a counter after the prefix (e.g. macvtap0, macvtap1). It's always using the first free one (also filling gaps). I'm using the mac address to map a device to a port object. The prefix is just required to limit the number of devices to iterate over.
The name is only unique within a hypervisor while the mac address must be unique cross the cloud! Saying so, a hypervisor could offer 99.999.999 network attachments just from a name point of view.
