Maybe we only want the driver_private_data versioned? It's not really clear from the wiki on the original design.

I tend to think of this like versioned objects though, and when you add/change/remove a field, you bump the version, which would also bump the version on any container objects, e.g. if I add a field to DiskDiagnostics then I bump the version on that, and also bump the version on the containing Diagnostics object.

We might want to think about making these versioned objects anyway because they are going to be called over RPC from the nova-api to the nova-compute, and we could have mixed-level computes sending different results if we start adding/changing fields - so we'd want them versioned for RPC. That might also help us maintain a contract in the REST API, unless we aren't going to rely on the Diagnostics.serialize method for the response.

In other words, if the REST API is just going to get the json blob from the compute service, deserialize it and then return that in the response, it has to be versioned so the REST API can pin the version so we don't leak any changes. If the REST API is going to deserialize the Diagnostics blob and just pick attributes out of it for it's own response, then we can control that in the REST API with microversions and it's less important to version the object on the compute side.

Might be worth asking Dan Smith for his opinion here.
After talking with Dan in irc we decided that Diagnostics object should be versioned and we need to bump its version every time we add/change its fields.
parts of VM diagnostic BP. The REST API just cares about a certain version of the Diagnostics API and can cherry pick the values out of it that it needs (it's like a client). If there is a need/desire to expose new values out of the REST API, then we'd have a new microversion. But the Diagnostics object itself could iterate over time and the REST API might not change at all.
model class will be instantiated and populated by the virt drivers.
