I complained about this originally. IMHO, the object interface here should be pristine. It should do nothing other than convert a proper object serialized form into an object, and fail if that is not possible. That should have certain guarantees, like that we know that no changes were pending against the serialized object, and that we know it came from a certain version.

This hack breaks that guarantee, and means that this object can be serialized from proper form, or this other form which can actually change based on an external "library" of code. Further, objects deserialized with this method will take the maximum version of this object as defined locally (which will change over time) since that information is not provided in the serialized form.

IMHO, this is not a thing we should do on an object in the general sense, but rather provide the compatibility in the place where we know it's potentially in old format, and that is the compute node where we stored it as an unversioned blob. The code being on the object here would allow us to deserialize this over the wire from the old format, and we should never do or support that.
I agree with the point about obj_to_pirmitive staying pristine - but would still like to see some of the compat code move back to this object.
Agreed, i'm currently working on this it's related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/nova/+bug/1417201 - I have patch ready but i'm waiting to know if you want to do it before to push it.
