My opposition was only in the case where a change affects all previous versions, I find a bump somewhat useless in that case. More specifically I think we're overloading what a microversion means. I thought it meant that from microversion 2.x forward the API can be called like this and you can expect this response. Which means clients are free to ignore all microversions above what they decide they want to use. However if microversion 2.y means that 2.x, where x < y, is different then we're saying that it's not safe to use 2.x forever because it's behavior may change without a real indication. Yes it's indicated but in a place that someone who just wants to use 2.x shouldn't need to look.

I still fundamentally disagree that scheduler hints should be part of the API contract. They keep getting roped into talks of interoperability between clouds but I am unconvinced at this point that providing a strict API contract there does anything to help that. And I am unconvinced that it's a place where we need to look at interoperability right now. This is a place where innovation should be accepted IMO and not all of it needs to live in-tree. What that says is there is no room to experiment and iterate on a solution before proposing it upstream. And I don't think everything in that space needs to live upstream. I'm not sure I'm gaining any traction with my arguments though.
an exception in this case. Since we accept that the scheduler is modular and extensible, it means that the API contract can be impacted as well.

Given that we really want to have clouds interoperable, we potentially have to consider first-class citizens (in-tree hints) that would be consistent across all OpenStack trademarked clouds, and second-class citizens (out-of-tree hints) that would not guarantee that you would have the same behaviour (like the same hint name shared between two totally different filters). MHO is that this distinction has to be very explicit by the API and we should stop to propose the same HintsController for both in-tree and out-of-tree, but rather discriminate out-of-tree hints in a specific other free-form key/value-ish attribute.

So, to summarize,
- I'd even consider to microversion in-tree hints
- I'd propose another attribute for out-of-tree hints that wouldn't be versioned
an exception in this case. The change that follows this, I am totally fine with, its a screw up thats getting fixed.

You could argue the max API version could advertise that bug fix to a client, but that seems of minimal benefit.

My thinking here was more, if we add a scheduler hint, we probably only want to add that in a specific micro version, to match the rest of the API, and thats fine. In those cases its good to advertise the version, because with the relaxed validation its hard to know when a hint is accepted by the system vs, just being ignored to allow for out of three schedulers to pick up that hint.

Having said all that, I could be totally overthinking all this.
Kevin L.
