Some of the Instance's attributes are actually *not* stored in the instances cell DB table(s) -- they are stored in things like instance_extra -- particularly things like NUMA topology and PCI stats. We are actively trying to pull all such fields out of instance_extra and into the new allocations table and represent all resources in a generic, consistent fashion. I worry that having the Instance object embedded in the BuildRequest object here might make things more complicated in our efforts...
the Instance fields and was starting to look very similar. All of the attributes necessary to fulfill an instance show/details request. That consists of what's currently in BuildRequest, some attributes from the RequestSpec relationship, and then the following attributes which this patch was adding until I switched it to just add Instance. reservation_id, launch_index, hostname, kernel_id, ramdisk_id, root_device_name, user_data.

2. The attributes necessary to create the instance in the cell database after scheduling. This is mostly some additional internal details like system_metadata.

Between the two of those that's like 95% of the Instance object that needs to be available in BuildRequest. So it makes sense to just store a serialized Instance.

If NUMA topology and PCI stats are not displayed in the API, which I would hope not, and if they can be stored after scheduling has occurred, then they'll basically be ignored here. Also keep in mind that this is about storing a serialized Instance object, not creating a relationship to any instance related database tables. And that BuildRequest is short lived and only exists between the API boot request and the instance being created within a cell db.
e26930ad79441736d9a4a62d8f943558471d2dbc"}],"nova/compute/api.py":
                # Create an instance_mapping. I originally went the route of trying to store the instance components necessary for doing that, but it turns out that almost all of instance is needed. So for now just stashing an serialized, but not persisted, instance object makes sense.

There is a lot of cleanup that could eventually be done but it's somewhat orthogonal to the cells effort so I'm punting on doing that here.
Mmm,good catch, we're just directly creating a new object but I can't see where that field is set unless by reading something from the DB, which is not what we're doing in https://github.com/openstack/nova/blob/a6425fa3040e1b92e632b4b056fdb96ed52bfa8d/nova/compute/api.py#L976
a5d3b57c3d4fb785c5f5eebf2559e495595a6b34"}],"nova/tests/unit/compute/test_compute_api.py":
Hmm, this might be a little extreme. I think this is the right thing to do because I do want to use the mock on objects.Instance.
