And if upper layer code need, he can do existing checking before call this fetch_image() method as he need. And the key to me is, in future when we implement particular sub-class handlers for particular hypervisor as a Nova built-in plugin, we can/should put it into a hypervisor sub-direcltory such as libvirt or etc. , but input nova/virt/imagehandles folder.

The reason why I'm going to accept your bew image handler directly is that I'm thinking probably we can put some common handlers into there, says something like 'default' handler (download approach) which not belongs to such particular hypervisor driver. state added to the _IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO global variable.

If the nova process is restarted, this data will obviously be lost. So will this 'handle_image' method do the right thing when an existing running VM shuts down, after nova has been restarted. the _IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO data stored when the VM was started will be missing in this scenario. If it operates correctly even when the IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO data is missing, then can we just delete all this global caching and thus simplify the code.
Smart question! I'd like answer it.

Firstly I need to clarify is that under my design each particular image handler implementation/class should has a capability to make sure which image was handled by itself (and whether it can handle it), that says 1. if handler can't handle the image (by image id or path or something internal checking mechanism) then "fetch_image()" should return "false", and other followed handler will take over; 2. if it did not fetch the image (by image id or path or something internal checking mechanism), then "remove_image()" should return "false" too.

Secondly, I consider there are two reasons to me for using _IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO:
1. Under current implementation stage, using _IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO could improve handler matching performance efficiently, and don't need do a lot of works between Line #385-407 (some http/restful communications between Glance and Nova will all be saved).

2. In future enhancement, (of cause only if we really needed, so it's a reserved space here for enhancement in future), we can using some persistent approach to save _IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO (db or a metadata file), and above "load_image_handlers()" can reload it when Nova process restart (IMO the stuff can be added to Line #350), this will help keep handler matching performance obviously (above point). And more, we can using this to allow Nova do such fetched-image-destroy function, that say if admin remove a handler option from "image_handlers" then when Nova startup we can using _IMAGE_HANDLER_ASSO info to remove those handled images by that removed image handler but always using "default" handler.

thanks.
Kevin L.
