This returns connection_info which includes 'device_path' that shows the device path in computer host.

With encrypted volume, after the above steps, it needs to decrypt the device. It creates a decrpted device with 'cryptset open', and then make device_path in connection_info refer to the new decrypted device.

When rebooting an VM, Nova instance is shut down without any detaching/disconnection operations. But when starting, it calls connect_volume for every block device. For encrypted volumes, as device_path refers to a decrypted device after opening. It can't be run with scsi_id. As a result, call to connect_volume on the decrypted device leads exception.

Possible Solutions were:-
1. Skip the connect_volume for Encrypted Volumes during reboot
2. to disconnect dmcrypt device when down and then re-attach the device when up

Second solution makes sense and was suggested in community.
detaching operations. I think you need to make this code cater for the scenario where that file is missing?

The reboot operation is calling _connect_volume which (if I skip over the issue with the missing /dev/mapper/crypt... file in closedown) fails because the /dev/disk/by-path/ip... file is not present. This is so because it failed to create it as a link to the /dev/mapper/crypt...file due to that being missing. Seems to me that the teardown is not leaving it in the expected state.

Thus the right approach seems to me to be to cater for the worst case scenario i.e. catch errors like the failed ln and/or verify the target file exists before attempting the ln. Then check what artifacts relating to the encrypted volume exist and if not as expected teardown the connection and rebuild it?
67fdd403aa68e7ae2ef2b3d6d29cabf25be94fe1"}]}
