Thanks for digging that other bug up, @mriedem.

The commit that introduced paramiko in liberty converted two methods that had previously used ssh-keygen: generate_key_pair & generate_fingerprint.

This patch only reverts one of those cases: generate_key_pair. I suspect I would need to revert both cases back to ssh-keygen to fix that other bug too (but I didn't dig too deeply), and reverting generate_fingerprint opens the OpenSSH 6.8 can of worms (https://review.openstack.org/#/c/191847/).

I'll look into manually testing these combinations on Monday, and report back. Reading through it the first time, I thought the only issue was that paramiko < 2.0 moved key encoding from DER to BER. However, since you later say Newton onwards use paramiko >= 2.0 then it seemed this patch was totally unnecessary for stable/newton and master. Having read it again since, I'm thinking what you're actually trying to say is that paramiko introduces too many downsides compared to its upsides. I think the compatibility issues are probably worth considering this effective revert.

However, as we're injecting back a shadow dependency, it would be good to catch the case where ssh-keygen does not exist in the path (people might have wedged this in a minimal container, as they are all the rage) and log a meaningful ERROR on the command not found case.

And we'll want to release note it, as it's a dependency shift that people will need to be aware of.

So -1 for 3 things:

We should wait until master opens up (that should be about a week away).

We should log a meaningful error if ssh-keygen exec throws an exception that the command is not found.

We should have a release note describing that ssh-keygen needs to be installed on nova-api nodes.
Yup.
