I ran a few simple tests converting the Fedora 25 cloud image from qcow2 to raw (which is a pretty representative test):

* Use default cache=unsafe, don't sync
$ time (qemu-img convert -f qcow2 -O raw Fedora-Cloud-Base-25-1.3.x86_64.qcow2 foo.raw)

real 0m2.060s
user 0m1.789s
sys 0m0.282s

* Use cache=none
$ time (qemu-img convert -t none -f qcow2 -O raw Fedora-Cloud-Base-25-1.3.x86_64.qcow2 foo.raw)

real 0m4.824s
user 0m2.378s
sys 0m0.657s

* Use cache=unsafe, and sync afterwards
$ time (qemu-img convert -f qcow2 -O raw Fedora-Cloud-Base-25-1.3.x86_64.qcow2 foo.raw && sync foo.raw)

real 0m3.256s
user 0m1.765s
sys 0m0.459s

I ran all of the above a bunch of times to ensure the times shown are representative. My workstation has an SSD.

So, we can see that cache=unsafe has a performance benefit on an unloaded workstation even if we manually sync the output afterwards, which is also safe.

There's another potential downside of cache=unsafe, though, which is that we're polluting the hosts's io cache. i.e. This may cause other operations to slow down more than expected.

It's a toss up, though. I went for -t none rather than a subsequent sync step because it's simpler and self-contained, and won't affect anything else. It's about 1.5 secs slower in this test, but I'm guessing that in practise this difference will be negligible next to the time taken to download the image from glance.

Personally I'm inclined to keep it simple (and correct) unless this turns out to be an issue in practise.
1301368bf2352eddcc664202d7f159f523f681e2"}]}
