So I disconnected the bulb, and that took care of the warning.

That's what this feels like. Instead of addressing the problem, which is trying to store records with identical values for a unique column by hacking at the value of one of them, let's just silence the warning. It would be cleaner to simply remove the unique constraint, since our functional design calls for duplicate values to exist in that column when mapping instances. So I disconnected the bulb, and that took care of the
> warning.

I think a better analogy would be a poorly designed car that had an oil sensor with no hysteresis. When you corner hard, the oil light comes on. You know it's not low on oil, it's just alerting you to something that doesn't matter. You could leave the bulb in so that if it goes off under other conditions you can do something about it, or you can remove it so it doesn't keep annoying you. I think we're discussing this because some people are in the latter category: they don't like four warnings during unit tests.

> That's what this feels like. Instead of addressing the problem,
> which is trying to store records with identical values for a unique
> column by hacking at the value of one of them, let's just silence
> the warning. It would be cleaner to simply remove the unique
> constraint, since our functional design calls for duplicate values
> to exist in that column when mapping instances. IOW, if we are
> deliberately putting in duplicate values, the column should not be
> defined as unique.

Well, the column is not "unique uuid" it's "unique string". I don't think removing the uniqueness constraint is what we want, because if we store uuids in there in the 8-4-4-4-12 format, we want the DB to kick it back for us.

This discussion spawned another way to solve this which is even less code/change. We could avoid using the object for the low-level database manipulation of the marker. That way we'd never load a ill-formatted value into the object field, and can keep the object field as it is for future warnings.

I know you don't like any of this approach, but do you like that better than this and/or better than just dealing with the warnings?
["SERVICE_USER
2018-05-11 10:22:44.000000000
Patch Set 1:

* nova-quobyteci-dsvm-volume http://78.46.57.153:8081/refs-changes-69-567669-1 : SUCCESS

https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/ThirdPartySystems/Quobyte_CI
Patch Set 1:

> like that better

It just seems like another hack to get around the fact that we need to store the marker. In nova-manage, we use a different
representation when setting the instance mapping marker to work around the
fact that we have a unique constraint on the column (unique string, indifferent
to the UUIDness we impart on it).

When we do this, the oslo library generates a warning about the formatting, which
is undesirable for test runs. Since we're already storing values in this object
field that don't meet the required formatting, this patch changes that field to
a bare StringField, and keeps the version at 1.0. This is okay because we're not
changing the format of the object on the wire (it is actually never serialized
anyway), and because we're not changing anything that would prevent older code
from serializing it (if we ever did). Doing so eliminates the warning and makes
the field definition line up with how we are using it.

Note that it has also been asserted that the marker we use for map_instances may
show up in certain APIs, although I do not understand how that could happen.
However, this patch also adds a filter to the only InstanceMappingList query that
could return it, ensuring that we do not.

Change-Id: I4625e64a53acd776356de5b0b40d4faef9dc343a
