13:39:19.000000000
The way reshape() is currently implemented, it doesn't really matter what you put in the consumer generation here.

For reference, here is the proposed implementation of the reshape() method on the DB side:

https://review.openstack.org/#/c/582383/1/nova/api/openstack/placement/objects/resource_provider.py

We essentially blow away the allocations for all resource providers involved in the reshaper operation (in order to prevent InventoryInUse exceptions when removing inventory records in the ResourceProvider.set_inventory() calls) and because there is now code that auto-deletes any consumer that has no allocations (which always is the case for any consumer involved in the reshape operation because we just blew away all the resource provider's allocations in order to replace/move the inventory records for those providers), we end up deleting the consumer records entirely and thus need to completely re-create the consumer records before the final AllocationList.create_all() operation.

What this means in practice is that consumers involved in the reshape operation will end up being recreated and get a new generation.

The other option is to not re-use any of these existing methods:

AllocationList.delete_all()
AllocationList.create_all()

because each of the above methods blows away everything to do with either a resource provider's inventory records *or* a set of consumer's allocation records, which ends up causing the "auto-delete consumers with no allocations" to delete those consumer records.

Furthermore, we could not use the existing
ResourceProvider.set_inventory() method which also blows away all the existing inventory records for a resource provider before re-creating them with the inventories passed to that method. This would allow us to not have to do the resource provider generation dance that currently happens in the proposed reshape() implementation.

Eric makes the argument that the consumer generations for consumers involved in the reshape() operation should be incremented from their original setting and that there should be some sort of check around these generation increments. I disagree because I think that any caller of a "replace the world" operation like POST /reshaper is essentially saying "to heck with it, just make things equal to what I'm giving you.
This was a yesterday story.
