So by\ndefault \u0027pc\u0027 lets you hotplug upto 31 devices (*despite*, Nova\u0027s default\n`[libvirt]/num_pcie_ports` set to \"0\").\n\nHowever, for the \u0027q35\u0027 machine type, the current default of \"0\" devices,\nfor \u0027num_pcie_ports\u0027 means, Nova defaults to libvirt\u0027s \"1\".  I.e. when\nusing \u0027q35\u0027 machine type, libvirt creates only _one_ spare PCIe root\nport, which is not sufficient if you want to hotplug devices.\n\nThis is a regression in compared to the behaviour we see with the \u0027pc\u0027\nmachine type.\n\nIn other words, when using Q35 machine type, if you want to be able to\nhotplug devices, we must explicitly create PCIe root ports.\n\nAfter consulting the QEMU and libvirt folks, increase the number (32) of\nPCIe root ports out of the box, so that there is no regression w.r.t\nhotplug for \u0027q35\u0027 machine type when compared to \u0027pc\u0027.\n\n    - - -\n\nOn memory usage of using Q35 machine type with different number of root\nports:\n\n  - Q35 with 4 root ports: the \"resident RAM\" is 2056 MB\n  - Q35 with 32 root ports: the \"resident RAM\" is 2066 MB\n\nThe additional overhead of increasing the number of root ports is just\nabout 16 MB.
