The original deadline for changing that was January, but it has been on the books for a long time, and people are (rightly) concerned that it will get pushed again. Recently, the patch that this half-reverts was merged against nova, which makes it only installable in py3. That\u0027s a problem because (a) nova literally cannot be used in the default configuration of devstack and (b) any of those projects that are waiting for the py2 switchover are now already screwed because nova can\u0027t be installed.\n\nOne option is to fully revert the patch and go back to how things were until the switchover in January. That\u0027s not desirable because it would also revert a bunch of our own jobs that are now running in py3.\n\nAnother option is this patch, which reverts our minimum python version, but doesn\u0027t change anything else. The problem with this in isolation is that nova would be installed by default in devstack in py2 mode, but we don\u0027t have *any* testing of that anymore in our gate.\n\nIt seems that most people are in agreement with the following plan: We will do this half-revert, allowing nova to be installed in py2 mode where necessary. We will go ahead and merge the py3 devstack default switch now, which means nova will be gating on the default devstack configuration. Projects that are still not ready for py3 can force their jobs to py2 and install nova, but without any guarantees that recent changes haven\u0027t broken its use on py2. In January, when we would have thrown the master switch anyway, nova can un-revert the minimum python version part of the original change (i.e. this patch) to go back to py3-only.\n\nMy major concern was the difference between what we test and what the devstack default is.
