Nova before OTU ignored the problem of leaking that state between users. Saying that statefull devices are unsupported basically means direct-physical ports and any GPU PF passthrough got unsupported retroactively regardless of the fact that we advertised those features for a long time and deployers are using them.\n\nWhat happening here in my eyes is that Nova stops ignoring the problem of statefull PCI devices and starts offering a limited solution for the problem in the form of OTU (supported) + external cleaner (not supported, but example provided). If OTU is used for rewriting a NIC firmware or resetting the GPU PF between users that should be in the same support envelope as wiping NVMe disks with OTU.\n\nIn my eyes OTU is fully supported upstream as we added all the necessary bits (code, test coverage, doc). If the deployer decides to use OTU + an external cleaner script to wipe NVMes then the act of wiping is not supported by nova, but creating the OTU reservation is.","commit_id":"dcf94fa0d6b89b6ecf217e57437f9d2896ab91c0"},{"author":{"_account_id":4393,"name":"Dan Smith","email":"dms@danplanet.com","username":"danms"},"change_message_id":"a4e4ddabc5750cb6b6db51855c0ff401b8743953","unresolved":true,"context_lines":[{"line_number":749,"context_line":"support for stateful devices. are never bound to a normal kernel driver.\n\nThere are a number of reasons for it, one being that having VF bound to the kernel driver can cause higher IRQ load on the host.\n\nlibvirt can rebind the chooses to automate cleaning is committed to ensuring the pre and post-conditions hold before marking the device as available.\n\nFor some regulatory domains, there may be a legal requirement around\nthe timescale in which the cleaning must be done or an auditability requirement.\n\nObviously there is nothing that Nova can really do in that regard, but there is anonter consideration.\n\nAs a normal tenant, I cannot see if a flavor uses a OTU device.\nin a cloud environment, it\u0027s expected to be abel to endlessly create and delete short lived vms as needed within the bounds of quota.\n\nOTU devices are diffent then every other resource in nova bar ironic nodes in that\nWhen the instance is delete, the device is not immediately available again synchronously.\n\nTo me, this potentially is a limited denial of service vector, since if the cleaning is not done promptly and quickly it may lead to no valid hosts.\n\nA normal use can infer that it\u0027s a OTU device from the depend on the device an how you choose to clean it.\nlike if your going to DD a disk then that purportional to the size of the disk adn the same is likely ture of FPGA ectra. \n\nThe former risk i
