While I was very hopeful that something would be possible, it became clear that database libraries are incompatible with async systems on many levels, and that to create database abstraction layers which are would mean the production of code that is vastly less efficient and more complex in the context of Python, which despite the niceness of the "yield from" trick, really lacks native asynchronous structures as nicely as a system which does, such as Go. So I don't have much choice but to oppose any efforts towards moving Openstack applications, either legacy or new, which are database-centric towards explicit async programming. The situation here is definitely much better than twisted, as you can port code that is synchronous to async with this approach much more easily, b.c. you still have return values and exception catching in largely the same way (of course with a lot more machinery on top to make it work). I am hoping that the amount of code that has to change will be lots smaller, particularly that you do have at least a shot at having a lot more intermediary functions being agnostic of whether they are invoked async or not.

Obviously I want SQLAlchemy to have an answer for asyncio, now that this specific implementation has been now "blessed", and I've begun working on the event and pool system first, this is mostly straightforward. I would expect that all the folks working on SQLAlchemy-like systems such as aiopg would be willing to step up and provide support for these systems, as they have an interest in this story being available; support would be very helpful as these systems necessarily have to live separately from SQLA core proper (though not as far away as aiopg).

This is for pure asyncio that has "yield from", so it's python 3 only. It also would have to provide an adapter to throw most DBAPIs into a thread pool. This won't perform terrifically as I anticipate the overhead of movement in/out of the thread pool for every DBAPI call will be significant. aiopg is one of the current examples of a truly async psycopg2-based DBAPI, though there are many aspects of its implementation I don't agree with.
Patch Set 1:

(7 comments)

Might also be worthwhile to link to https://wiki.openstack.org/wiki/UnifiedServiceArchitecture#eventlet_vs_Twisted (don't think I saw it linked to); which has some historical info that might be relevant to this.
Patch Set 2:

I posted a second version of the spec. Reading over
the old UnifiedServiceArchitecture page in the wiki, it's not clear to
me why we felt we needed to use any special I/O handling at the
beginning of the project. This spec continues with the assumption,
substituting one tool and programming style for another.

My understanding is that asynchronous I/O techniques are usually
applied where an application is I/O-bound on several inputs or
outputs, or wants to work with many many sockets -- possibly more than
the supported number of concurrent threads that could be managed
reasonably (assuming the usual model of one thread per socket). Do we
have any components that scale that way? Even Ceilometer, which sends
many messages about the stats it collects and consumes all of the
notifications generated by the other services and is therefore
probably the busiest user of the message bus, has been reported to be
CPU-bound rather than I/O-bound (either on itself, or the database)
and really only needs a few sockets to listen to messages and talk to
the database.

The vast majority of our services either run as a WSGI app or
communicate with the database. Some do both. Only a few agents do
neither. Any tool we choose, therefore, should work for those cases.

Web servers are the obvious place where we wouldn't be able to predict
the number of incoming requests, and where we might have a large
number of simultaneous socket connections. That makes them seem like a
good fit for asyncio. However, we've built all of our services as WSGI
apps, and so the fact that asyncio does not support WSGI (or vice
versa, depending on your perspective) is a problem. Would we be
better served (pun not intended) to rely on stable production-ready
WSGI containers, and horizontal scaling, rather than picking up some
of the newer tools associated with asyncio?

The database driver is the other place where we do a lot of I/O and
might benefit from async, rather than blocking, I/O. However,
SQLAlchemy does not yet support asyncio (or vice versa). While the
Ceilometer team might feel comfortable switching to an asyncio-based
Mongo driver, if there are no other such options for the rest of the
OpenStack services then we need a better picture for how we are
supposed to proceed before agreeing to go down this path.

If asyncio does not work together with WSGI or SQLAlchemy, then we
have two large blocking issues with adopting asyncio completely. We
could consider using it only where possible, but would we see enough
benefit in terms of performance or throughput in the few apps where we
could use asyncio to warrant the amount of work it would take to
modify them and support both models simultaneously?

We also have to consider how that would affect maintenance of all of
our libraries (service clients, Oslo, and third-party). We already
have some places where we have to test Oslo libraries separately with,
and without, eventlet. I don't think we want to have to do that for a
third option.

There are a few other practical considerations to a shift as big as
proposed here.

For example, discussing whether threading or asyncio is "easier" to
use is largely subjective. When eventlet was selected the developer
pool was significantly smaller than it is now, and I'm not sure
everyone agreed completely on the choice at the time. We're unlikely
to find the community agreeing completely on that point today, so we
need to look seriously at the amount of work involved in any change
this big, and weigh that cost against the benefits.

Given the issues with libraries supporting asyncio, a more objective
question is "How many of the tools and libraries we are already using
support the proposed approach?" For example, we have encountered some
libraries that do not work well with eventlet, and we have pointed to
cases where techniques and libraries we use do not work with
asyncio. Do we rely on any libraries that are not thread-safe?

A common complaint with threading is deadlocks due to accessing global
state. From what I've seen, most of our global state is kept in the
database, rather than in-memory data structures, because we're already
dealing with distributed services and "eventual consistency". How
often do we keep global state in memory in an application in a way
that would be affected by concurrency changes -- where would we need
to add new locking code if we switch to threads, for example?

We have several places where we use green threads, often explicitly,
and rely on eventlet's to patch the threading module so the locking
classes work. Assuming that code is correct now, would we expect it to
function correctly under regular threads (if we do not let eventlet
monkey patch)?

Another consideration is how much we would need to change the
application code. One reason eventlet was appealing was that code
using eventlet looks synchronous, even though it often ends up running
differently when executed. Explicit async code needs to be changed in
a few ways, as you describe in the spec. Would we need to make similar
changes for threading? For example, we might need to add locks in
places where eventlet is protecting us today. Is there any way to
predict what other changes might be needed, without doing a full
analysis of the OpenStack code base (which I'm definitely not asking
for)?

To sum up: I'm not sure we need to worry as much about asynchronous
I/O as we are. If I remember correctly, we originally started
discussing asyncio as an alternative to eventlet in the context of
porting OpenStack, and especially oslo.messaging, to Python 3, rather
than doing it for its own sake. While eventlet's support for Python 3
is improving, it's not 100% yet, and that is not the only motivation
we have for dropping it. Perhaps we should reframe this discussion in
terms of "moving away from eventlet" instead of "moving to" a specific
solution to give more attention to some of the alternatives in light
of the practical considerations I've mentioned above.
Patch Set 2:

"The database driver is the other place where we do a lot of I/O and might benefit from async, rather than blocking, I/O. In this case, SQLAchemy doesn't have to be modified at all.

As any other blocking functions called with loop.run_in_executor(). I suggest this option for any function which may block the event loop for "too long" (ex: more than 1 ms), especially I/O operations.

"If asyncio does not work together with WSGI or SQLAlchemy, then we have two large blocking issues with adopting asyncio completely."

I chose to put WSGI outside the spec. There *are* solutions to use WSGI with asyncio, but they require hacks like monkey-patching, or modifying the code (I don't know how exactly, sorry). I prefer to focus first on asyncio, to check if it fits into OpenStack, so then see if it's worth to investigate the WSGI issue.

"We could consider using it only where possible, but would we see enough benefit in terms of performance or throughput in the few apps where we could use asyncio to warrant the amount of work it would take to modify them and support both models simultaneously?"

Performances are not my primary motivation, it's more to have more reliable code with a nice syntax. If the code runs faster, it would be a nice side effect. According to comments, OpenStack doesn't fit into the asyncio ideal use case (a lot of idle sockets like web sockets) where asyncio can be expected to be much faster. By the way, asyncio is based on an event loop, as eventlet. So there is no huge difference between eventlet and asyncio in term of internal design. It's more differences in the way to use them.

"We also have to consider how that would affect maintenance of all of our libraries (service clients, Oslo, and third-party). We already have some places where we have to test Oslo libraries separately with, and without, eventlet. I don't think we want to have to do that for a third option."

I understood that most OpenStack people want to replace eventlet with something else. Somewhere, we have to invest energy to fix the eventlet issue, no? I don't understand the logic.

In short, you choose to keep eventlet with its known issues?

eventlet looks to be an expensive technical debt in OpenStack, no?

"we need to look seriously at the amount of work involved in any change this big, and weigh that cost against the benefits."

In most comments, I read something like *all* OpenStack code must be fully rewritten from scratch to put "yield from" *everywhere*.

I checked asyncio source code. asyncio must use yield-from everywhere since all code must be asynchronous (which is not the case for OpenStack where blocking function calls are acceptable).

The development version of asyncio has 11,006 lines. Only 94 lines contains "yield from": 0.8%. (To be honest, I had to double check. I was surprised by this low number :-))

> "How many of the tools and libraries we are already using support the proposed approach?"
> For example, we have encountered some libraries that do not work well with eventlet,
> and we have pointed to cases where techniques and libraries we use do not work with asyncio.

Remember that OpenStack uses eventlet with monkey-patching. A very few number libraries are prepared for monkey-patching. I'm suprised that it works so well :-) As I wrote in the spec, most eventlet issues come from the monkey-patching, not from asynchronous programming (green threads).

> Do we rely on any libraries that are not thread-safe?

The principle of asyncio is to run all code in a single thread. In this case, no lock is needed ;-)

*If* you choose to run code in a dedicated (pool of) thread(s), you control which functions are called in a thread. If needed, you may put locks on functions which are not thread-safe.

Later, you may enhance these libraries to add a builtin ayncio support, or make them thread-safe, if you like.

Again, we don't know which libraries *must* be called in threads for performances. So it's difficult to estimate the amount of work to use them correctly.

> where would we need to add new locking code if we switch to threads, for example?

I cannot answer. I don't know if locks are missing.

I hope that no new lock is need ;-) I'm not sure that all issues will be seen with asyncio if most of the code run in a single thread.

> We have several places where we use green threads, often explicitly, and rely on eventlet's to patch the threading module so the locking classes work. Assuming that code is correct now, would we expect it to function correctly under regular threads (if we do not let eventlet monkey patch)?

I have the same question. I expect some issues from @oslo_concurrency.lock_utils.lock or @oslo_concurrency.lock_utils.synchronized. I'm not sure that these decorators were already well tested with native threads. If there are issues with these two decorators, I expect that it should be easy to fix them.

I checked ceilometer: lockutils doesn't look to be used. ceilometer/openstack/common/lockutils.py exists, but I don't see it used outside tests.

> Another consideration is how much we would need to change the application code. One reason eventlet was appealing was that code using eventlet looks synchronous, even though it often ends up running differently when executed.

If you take blocking code and run it in asyncio: it just works. Blocking functions will block a few milliseconds, that's all.

If you want better performances, enable asyncio debug mode: it will warn you if a function blocks longer than 100 ms. You can tune the threshold (100 ms) to detect more blocking calls.

See:
https://docs.python.org/dev/library/asyncio-dev.html#debug-mode-of-asyncio
and
https://docs.python.org/dev/library/asyncio-dev.html#handle-blocking-functions-correctly

> Explicit async code needs to be changed in a few ways, as you describe in the spec.
> Would we need to make similar changes for threading?
> For example, we might need to add locks in places where eventlet is protecting us
> today.

Hum, I'm not aware of eventlet protections. What are these protections? What I understood is that basically green threads are similar to threads: a green thread can be interrupted anywhere. So code running in green threads must be "thread-safe" (green thread safe? :-)). Concurrency issues already exist with eventlet.

So I understand that existing race conditions were already fixed. No?

asyncio may "hide" more issues than eventlet since there are less places where your code may be interrupted (ex: at exactly 94 lines in asyncio). I don't know if it's correct to say that asyncio hides issues, since there are no more issues.

Well, let's take a dummy example:

    def unsafe_method(self):
        unique_id = self.data['id']
        maybe_async_func()
        self.data['id'] += 1
        return unique_id

Using eventlet, you don't know if maybe_async_func() may pause unsafe_method(), in which case unsafe_method() can be called again from a different green thread => race condition.

Unsafe asyncio version:

    def unsafe_method(self):
        unique_id = self.data['id']
        yield from always_async_func()
        self.data['id'] += 1
        return unique_id

=> there is an obvious race condition: "yield from" interrupts unsafe_method(), so you may get the same identifier twice. You need a lock to protect self.data or write the code differently (ex: increment id before calling the second function).

Using asyncio, you must use "yield from" if the second function is asynchronous. There is not "maybe" async function. A function is always or never asynchronous.

Now, let's say that the second function is not asynchronous:

    def unsafe_method(self):
        unique_id = self.data['id']
        sync_func()
        self.data['id'] += 1
        return unique_id

In this case, you can only have a race condition if sync_func() calls again unsafe_method(), directly or indirectly. It's less likely since we don't pass self to sync_func().

As I wrote in the spec: asyncio only reduces the risk of race condition, insane code like reentrant and recursive function calls can still have race conditions ;-)

Note: if sync_func() schedules a call to unsafe_method() using call_soon() or a coroutine, the scheduled call will only be called "later", after unsafe_method() exited since unsafe_method() cannot wake up the event loop (there is no yield-from).

> Perhaps we should reframe this discussion in terms of "moving away from eventlet" instead of "moving to" a specific solution to give more attention to some of the alternatives in light of the practical considerations I've mentioned above.

This spec helped to evaluate the thread option. Do you see more alternatives?

If someone is motivated to replace eventlet with threads, it would be better to write a new spec. I didn't investigated the thread option, I only summarized comments.

I don't like threads, especially in Python, I prefer to stay away from them ;-)
Patch Set 2:

(3 comments)

> I understood that most OpenStack people want to replace eventlet with something else. Explicit CSP eases this, since rather than deep exceptions you have explicit layers between the processes. Of course, WSGI doesn't do a super job of supporting CSP,

With Python 3 support in eventlet now we don't have any particular urgency for revising things, but if we are changing things my preferences would be:
- full blown CSP, probably through the goless library
- regular threads / multiprocess
- asyncio/trollius/twisted

Because:
- (CSP > asyncio) channels are really quite different to the coroutine approach asyncio uses (you can buffer, you can force a particular channel into one direction rather than bidirectional, you can select on multiple channels to get the next actual output whereas using iterators you have to suspend on just one at a time).
- (CSP > threads) CSP abstractions are more capable than threads (though we could in principle write shims - indeed, thats what goless gives you...)
- (threads > asyncio) our code is currently written in threaded style, and I don't think the benefits (though there are some indeed) from asyncio is worth a full-code-base rewrite. CSP offers enough on top of that to make it worth it IMNSHO.
Patch Set 3:

Ideally this would merge with https://review.openstack.org/#/c/156711/ in a meta-spec to present a common overview of the problem, a list of potential solutions with their benefit and drawbacks -- then we can pick one option and have all the alternatives we rejected properly documented.
