I was not involved in OpenStack database design, nor are these points considering that OpenStack uses an SQL abstraction layer and an oslo.db library. These may be limitations of capacity technically, or procedural y (e.g. a rule to be consistent for the sake of consistency).

I share this information because to design an optimized and performant large MySQL system, these points can have a large impact across sizing, backups, performance and the are therefore a big deal in a larger more concurrent system.

For this example I will use the glance.images.checksum column (because it's a table in devstack with some data).

This column is defined as

`checksum` varchar(32) DEFAULT NULL

the column in indexed (important for this discussion)

KEY `checksum_image_idx` (`checksum`),

and the table is

ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8

A sample value is 8a40c862b5735975d82605c1dd395796

checksum is a MD5 string of 32 bytes. MD5's as we know ONLY store hexidecimal characters, (it can never be utf8).

On disk, MySQL stores this optimally at 32-35 bytes, however in memory this is 99 bytes long. That's 32 bytes x 3 bytes per character (utf8 datatype) + 2 bytes because it's VARCHAR, and 1 more byte because is is NULLABLE.

The optimal datatype for this column in CHAR(32) CHARACTER SET latin1 NOT NULL

Because, quite simply this is 32 bytes of memory for the indexed column, not 99 bytes. You may ask, big deal a few bytes. However when across dozens to hundreds of indexed columns in a database with millions of rows in tables, on a machine with a finite amount of RAM, the impact can mean queries running 10x slower.

Again, I caveat this comment with how to ideally design a MySQL database schema. In life however we make compromises, and some that may be applicable to OpenStack include, the lack of a data architect, an SQL abstraction layer, rules to enforce consistency and complexity of upgrading an existing product. Many of these can be overcome with the right investment.
Why is this spec only about MySQL?
