You should consider the example code in this README.rst file as being very similar (though condensed) to the code that should eventually be running in Nova.

One of the problems that an approach like this will introduce is there will need to be a giant set of conditionals (very similar to the existing code in /nova/virt/libvirt/vif.py that calls various plug_xxx() methods depending on the nic_type and other things.

My original idea was that having a single os_vif.objects.VIF() object constructed from the return of the Neutron port binding and details information would then be passed as-is to the os_vif.plug() call, thereby eliminating the need entirely to have a whole bunch of logic on Nova's side to create some VIF-type-specific object that must be passed to a plug operation.

I prefer the existing design which uses the singular VIF object and houses all of the logic and complexity inside the os_vif library as opposed to requiring all the clients of os_vif (like Nova) to implement all that logic and numerous conditionals.
the mode in this case is either "client" or "server" not a filesystem mode for the socket. client mode means the socket will be created by the network backend e.g. ovs and server means the socket will be created by qemu.
Sigh, we went over this in the spec already and this design I've implemented was agreed then :-(

The problem you describe really won't come to pass long term - it is only a short term issue.

First, there's really two parts to this - first constructing the initial VIF object, and second processing the objects. The latter is going to require a bunch of get_config_XXX conditionals regardless of which approach we take, as different VIF types have different means of configuring the virt layer interfaces. Having separate VIF subclasses for each type of config requirement actually simplifies the virt driver integration, as it is 100% clear what attributes are relevant for each configuration scenario. With a single object you never know which attribute is relevent in which scenario, which is one of the key problems we were aiming to solve with the refactor

For constructing the initial VIF object, we have to consider two stages of impl. Initially when we wire up os-vif into Nova, we will have the current Neutron port-binding data and have to use that to populate approach VIF objects. This will indeed require conditional logic to choose which subclass to instantiate. You can see an illustration of that here:

https://review.openstack.org/#/c/269672/3/nova/network/os_vif.py

from line 140 onwards. Note that having a single VIF object doesn't remove all this code, as 50% of the code is handling instantiation of the related Network/Subnet/etc objects

But this code is *only* alive for a short period of time. In the next phase of integration, the Neutron mechanisms will instantiate the right VIF subclass immediately in this code, serialize this and pass it across to Nova. So nova will no longer use the legacy port binding data at all - it can directly de-serialize the VIF instance and use it right away. 100% of the conditional logic disappears *and* we get to use strongly typed vif classes where it is obvious what data attributes are relevant to each VIF.

So I don't think your concern here is really relevant - looking to the final destination, having a sub-classes will be a clear win overall.
    #
