My POV is that if object exists it should be in "working" state. Lets assume that we have 2 users of the driver. 1 explicitly closes the connnection so the 2nd one will be broken and would have to deal with this somehow.

2) IMHO it normal to rely on GC. Connection will be kept alive while there are users of the driver object. If we'll keep driver internals as an acyclic graph (by using weakrefs) driver will be garbage collected right after last reference on it will be released by end-user application. In cpython it will be deleted by reference counted GC that happens immediately when object goes out of scope.

3) Mehdi could you please explain this part a little bit? How not closing the connection could result in message loss?
!!Please note that my answer is mostly about rabbitmq I don't know qpid well enough so it may be wrong in qpid case.

1) if listener object is garbage collected it's connection is also released and closed. In 99% of cases it's enough to cancel the consumers (1% is the problem that message broker will need some time to redeliver messages that was already delivered to this connection (see #3)).

3) Bug report says "Because of this messages are not processed properly."

I think it may be because of the fact that we don't set pre-fetch count properly.

What happens is that when a consumer is declared message broker sends *lots* of messages to the consumer e.g if a queue had 8000 messages they all will be delivered at once. Later this messages will stay in delivered/unacked state until consumer will be able to deal with them. Broker will only redeliver unacked messages when connection is closed (from what I know there is no separate timeout for this from broker side). This may lead to situation that while connection is open in the process we have messages that are "lost in the pipe" since broker thinks that they are delivered but we have not processed them and open connection prevents them from redelivering.

I think that situation with missing pre-fetch settings should be fixed by a separate patch.
1) Just curious, this could be a dumb question, is there a real time scenario in openstack where the listeners are being shared (two users of the driver) and the service needs to restarted.
About 1), yes closing the connection is this case seems a bad idea, I think the listener must release their resources on the connection, perhaps having something that do the reverse of declare.*consumer method.
