The problem you are addressing is that you want to make the error message more informative to end users.  Erno points out that schema-validation will catch this problem, and Mike points out that if the length is changed server-side, this code will be out of date (though the schema will still be correct).  Maybe the thing to do is make the call, but if it results in an exception, parse the exception to see if it\u0027s because of tag length, if so, translate to a meaningful message (getting the length limit from the exception), otherwise, just re-raise the exception.
