I was totally confused why these changes here, at first I thought you were just cleaning stuff up again - but that was wrong.

These changes are actually *needed* because in python 3 a StringIO object is going to hand out unicode stuff and you can't just give that to the new md5 guy in there all raw!

The fact that this test broke should have highlighted that the interface to the object is changing and you need to fix the code. Good test.

Getting this test to pass on the current code unchanged should probably be a blocker or we risk breaking clients. If you want to add a new test to validate we also do the right thing with byte based streams in python3 that's cool by me.
Since the Service class always opens files in "rb" mode I think this test was originally testing a slightly different behavior than what actually occurs.

I agree I'll will have to check that the new test works properly on the old code though just to be sure.
not super jazzed about loosing the test coverage for files opened without the 'b' flag :

I actually coded the StringIO test back in just to make sure the exception handling all worked like I thought...

https://gist.github.com/clayg/5f363c95a728d6bae881
1ee31bac6f81c36eda0be9e327180b7a725c257f"}],"tests/unit/utils.py":
