Let's take the class representing the container of items of the element of the list as a new class. And this new class has to be created invariably of which approach you take up. In my proposed case it is: ``MyCompositeField`` (derived from ``CompositeField``) and in the implemented case it is: ``TestListField`` (derived from ``ListField``) [0]. I don't fathom any extra steps involved which forces to create more classes while comparing these 2 approaches. But of course, when you have a composite field stuff (container of multiple attributes) inside the list element itself, like ``Complex`` field, in:

{"iSCSI": 2,
"String": 'a fourth string',
"Complex": {"integer": 4, "string": "hey"}
}

then you will have to create another class (in both the approaches) to accommodate the dot access of the attributes of the composite field (e.g. ``integer``). Help me understand if you thought about any other extra steps involved which I couldn't.

[0] https://review.openstack.org/#/c/495443/3/sushy/tests/unit/resources/test_base.py@168

> Why do you think that including an extra composite class is inherently more natural than using the _collect_fields function again in this class?

That new composite class which gets created and that solely intends to contain the attributes of the list element (and also facilitates the dot access of the attributes) is not an extra step, IMHO. A similar 'extra' class (the sublass of the ``ListField``, i.e. ``TestListField``) has to be created (just to contain the list element attributes) even in case of the approach so implemented in this patch. It has to be separate for each and every field which is a list and whose elements are not related.

From my perspective the reasoning behind the naturality is of course the more promptness of the composing nature compared to subclass-ing while programming. I probably wont be able to give you a solid argument in this context, but will try to provide one advantageous use case which just comes on top of my head. Lets take this example where a distinct list-value attribute contains 2 separate distinct elements in the same list value based on some type property (the type property could be outside or inside the list element value). When outside, the response could be one of these 2 at any given time:

item_type = "dash-separated",
"List": [
{"attr-1": "val01",
"attr-2": "val02",
},
{"attr-1": "val11",
"attr-2": "val12",
},
]

OR

item_type = "underscore-separated",
"List": [
{"attr_1": "value01",
"attr_2": "value02",
},
{"attr_1": "value11",
"attr_2": "value12",
},
]

Then you can define the list attribute as:

class Resource(ResourceBase):
list = base.FieldList('List', item_types[
MyDashSeparatedCompositeField,
MyUnderscoreSeparatedCompositeField])

or something similar. I find it difficult to envisage how to accommodate that in ``ListField`` approach. Not that you can't do it tho:

class Resource(ResourceBase):
list = base.ListFieldWrapper(
MyDashSeparatedListField('List'),
MyUnderscoreSeparatedListField('List'))

But that complicates from the user's PoV. She needs to remember another Field type (here the wrapper class). Again, when the ``item_type`` is present inside the element value (i.e. the list elements are supposed to be heterogeneous in nature) then the situation turns out to be even more complex. But in the ``FieldList`` you can still handle this by some minor tricky tweaking.

Please consider the depicted case as a hypothetical one and that too used for illustration purpose only. Probably there wont be any such scenarios encountered in real life. Please do let me know what you think.
I think that solution looks good, but I also think that it's a little more inconvenient to have to create other composite classes and then pass them in to a field list rather than creating a new class that inherits from field list and includes the items in the list as members like a composite class would though - it adds extra steps and forces you to create more classes for things that wouldn't otherwise need their own class. Why do you think that including an extra composite class is inherently more natural than using the _collect_fields function again in this class?
3220598e39dc5d4019daa7d36aa0aef2ce62e44e"}]}
