[1]

Perhaps it is a contrived scenario that this patch fixes, but _can_push() doesn't help if the db file is missing, I think? then an rsync will happen (in fact, the probe test proves that) and we could (before this patch) lose objects.

But, are we sure the _can_push() veto is a good idea? i.e. do we really want to always force usync once in sharding state? yes, it keeps the old db read only, but if the unsharded peer has a large number of rows to replicate then the new 'small and responsive' hash_shard.db will get filled and even after cleaving will have a bunch of deleted items in its db for reclaim_age.

Also, compare with what happens when an unsharded node replicates to a sharded node. I *think* its REPLICATE request will get a 404 because the hash.db is missing and it will do an rsync [2] - so we end up needing to cleave the rsync'd hash.db in that scenario.

With this patch, we could drop the _can_push() check and IF an unsharded peer has 2x row count then accept that it will rsync and merge to the 'read only' hash.db, and repeat the cleaving. Perhaps better, restart the cleaving.

[1] https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/deep-containers-replication
[2] that is what I observed while working on https://review.openstack.org/#/c/536520 where the replication source was the final shard shrinking back to the root
5213ba46fc847f471e9362e61593962c9cdb50ee"}],"swift/container/sharder.py":
                    # failed right here.
