Or cname_lookup, for that matter...

I think it's actually fairly reasonable to have those toward the front, ahead of ratelimit, in which case it won't really be a problem.

Come to think of it, do we have any explicit reasons for ratelimit's current recommended placement? All I see is

pipeline = ... bulk tempurl ratelimit tempauth copy ...

which doesn't give me any real indication of *why*, or even which other middlewares we *think* might influence where it should go...
the form "/v1/<account>/<container>/". I was mostly going off the bug report which said that these things goof it up.

I guess that you'd want to place ratelimit to the right of anything giving you a non-Swift-API endpoint. That includes stuff like swift3, tempauth, domain_remap, and so on... basically anything where your URL paths are not of the form "/v1/a/c/o".

You'd probably want it to the left of symlinks so you don't get extra limited for using those... or maybe you want it to the right so that you do.

IMO it's still a good idea to do this in case there are middleware configurations that require ratelimit to be in a place where it sees weird requests. My brain isn't working terribly well today, though, so I don't have an example ready.
